But yes, we would look for signs that you might appear weak to enemies and be made a target. Additionally as the security clearance is renewed, they can get a bit more hairy. We see A LOT of foreign spouses which usually is a red flag. Or if we see increased finances or additional bank accounts that aren’t used just open and sitting there etc.
My husband did end up taking a work poly (not lifestyle) for one of his contracting positions. Not due to any indicators, but because of the position.
However, I’ve seen these things that seem suspicious “waived” and signed off by a major 🤷♀️
At the end of the day - I don’t know why anyone trusts any government including our own. Government is set up to be ripe with abuses. Always question the government. I nearly was denied my clearance because I said I wouldn’t do what I was told but what was right - and that apparently freaked people out in 2003 - I was deemed unpatriotic. I had to please my “case” that in fact I was more patriotic than those mindless drones following orders just because.
Thankfully the final guy left to approve or disapprove my clearance agreed with me.
I had a ts/sci clearance and I processed other clearances for a bit.
A secret clearance is basically a credit check, questionnaire, and general fingerprint background check. They go back ten years, and might talk to family/friends about you. Usually they don’t. At this level they’re really looking for defaulting on loans or massive debt which would indicate your open to bribes or blackmail. Additionally, if you have a foreign spouse or a first generation American it might raise a red flag (depending on the country) and get more in-depth. But the average American would pass easily
Top secret - they are really gonna go ask your friends and family about you - like a lot. They go back 10 years or since you were 15 - which ever is less time. You got some friend you used to smoke weed with? Make sure you don’t add any friends of friends with that person - they will trace it down. red flags will have them investigate farther back than 10 years. The questionnaire is usually what gets people that and drug /alcohol use. Just lie you arent likely to get a lifestyle poly lol
Anyways my point - is that it’s actually pretty easy to get a clearance. It’s expensive - but not hard.

I have - at large events if the high ranking member is handing them out - not as reward, but more like a hey guys thanks for stopping in. It’s more “secretive” because it’s exactly the opposite of handing out your coin as a specific reward or because you “earned” it.
It’s definitely something you see more at division level or higher. So if you never been assigned to division or something of that nature, it’s not surprising you’ve never seen it.
