I tied knots like this into curtain cords when I was a child to make handles. You literally use a hangman’s noose, and run the cord through the loop once before pulling it tight, it creates a nice handle that lasts forever. There are variations where the loop stays open, which would be handy for a garage pull cord.
I think this might draw a more meaningful parallel if it were phrased, “To give a knee for your country”.
