All the guys who were trained with the M14 didn't know how to maintain them so they had problems, mostly from running them too dry. At the time they blamed the weapon. My dad was one of them. The guys trained with the M16 didn't have the same problems.
The M16 was rolled out to guys who had been trained on the M14. Nobody knew you needed to run them wet. Nobody was comfortable with them. You never, ever train someone for combat with a weapon and then give them a different one. The FNGs who came along later were trained with M16s and had no problems with them.
