I’m telling you as an archaeologist there is no proof of shield maidens. Women buried with the odd sword or martial burial goods isn’t proof. But hey, Norse mythology and TV tells you otherwise, so they must def existed.
I’ll tell you a secret known to us archaeologists... most the shit you see on TV is flat out wrong. ‘Shield maidens’ are found only in fictional sagas and have almost no evidence in the archaeological record. They find female remains with fake swords and occasionally real ones, but no where near the numbers to say they were ‘competent’ warriors at home. They are the exception, not something that can be claimed as the norm.
Most of the stuff you see on TV is revisionist bullshit cooked up by ‘feminist archaeologist’ (that’s a real thing believe it or not).
It’s more edgy and controversial to go against the grain, which draws you attention and funding when professor.
Was in Archaeology field in uni for a while and it was getting in vogue to have research relating to natural disasters (climate change) or to challenge well-documented evidence with gender theory (vikings were actually women warriors!).
Basically any sociology class. Weak pasty beta male showing slides of cherry picked data, 18-20 something white girls nodding in the front row, and bunch of keyed up minorities chiming in with their ‘truth’. Any white guys will either have dread locks, gay, or super liberal ‘allies’ acknowledging what the trust fund baby lecturer says.
