I may be grasping here and my hope my be misplaced but...
What if the conservatives on the court did this strategically? Yes, Alito and Thomas split to dissent, but the other conservatives sided with the libs on this. In doing so, they've now, effectively, green-lighted the legislatures in those states to declare their results are invalid/inconclusive/fraudulent and then appoint their own electors. According to today's ruling, no one outside those states would have standing to do jack shit about it.
Again, my last hopes for the great American experiment might be misplaced.
I do think the Republican legislators were hoping SCOTUS would take the heat for them so they wouldn't have to stick their necks out to stand up for their citizens, their state constitutions, the US Constitution, and the American people in any real meaningful way.
