Studying for the test teaches you essential knowledge regarding signal propagation, antenna theory, and comms protocols that have been perfected over almost a century (mostly by veterans) for damn good reason. You can simply buy a lightsaber and hack at things like a dumb-ass... or you can become a Jedi with a week or less of study. Who is going to weild the tool more effectively?
