It's a fair point, but we were very small on the world stage then. A sustained internal conflict now (and it would be sustained, there are at least 10 million committed, up to 50 million committed people on each side) will ensure Chinese Hegemony for at least the next 50 years if not more.
Also, quelling a Rebellion (which is what our Civil War was) is a different animal than a real Civil War that has fervent supporters on both sides throughout the nation.
I''m not saying the eventual victors won't end up following our current Constitution (if we win), but that as a country we will be changed forever, with an internal focus that lasts many years.
