Brazil is one of the least homogenous countries I can think of. It’s like America but... South.
The reason they vote for socialism is because corruption (cultural and political) created a massive wealth disparity—far worse than anything this country has ever seen—and politicians were able to exploit that to gain power by promising equality. That’s where there are tons of similarities. It seems there’s always a type of politician that vilifies the rich, panders to the poor, and yet works behind the seems both to enrich himself and impoverish others, so that the words he speaks in public ring truer every day.
This is the left in a nutshell, regardless of the country or the people in it.

There are no battle lines drawn in this country like the last time where there was a clear geographical and ideological demarcation between north and south, union vs. confederacy.
