A lot of centrism comes from disappointment in both parties and a lack of giving a damn about most political issues. Can you really fault people for being disappointed with the swamp creatures of the GOP? If there wasn't a big culture war going on, if the democrats weren't in support of destroying statues, stifling free speech and wiping their ass with the constitution as a whole, if the only differences between the left and right were policy issues, I'd genuinely look at both and give them equal consideration. Due to taxes, healthcare and a few issues that concern me I'd still lean republican but there are dozens of issues that both sides bicker about that never have and never will affect me, but I'm forced to have an opinion about because of the media.
Centrism is being phased out now because people increasingly see one side or another as destructive, malicious and actively dangerous. I listed (and you're aware of as is) the reasons for why the right-leaning people feel so. The left-leaning ones are worried about coronavirus and violence against blacks and the like. Argue if you want about the validity of their worries but that doesn't make those people any less worried.

It's very easy being trapped in these circles. I got lucky and got out because I noticed that they were actively working to sabotage my hobby of video games. I can understand keeping your distance. I'm not of great health and at the very least, I don't wanna bring anything back to my older relatives. The mask paranoia has been idiotic though, and I guarantee the idiots on the left who genuinely believe that wearing masks is the end-all solution have probably spread it more than anyone else, especially with the jam-packed, shoulder to shoulder crowds at Black Lives Matter marches.
Even if you wanted to, why bother apologizing if these people are not willing to forgive? Even in cases like Pewdiepie's where he genuinely apologized, they're still convinced he's a nazi and will continue to insist that he is.

Partially perhaps, but it was a referendum on so much more than that. It was a referendum on the EU and the globalist agenda as a whole first and foremost, on numerous traditional values that extend far beyond the gay civil union question. But painting it as just "pro gay vs anti gay" is much easier.

Living in Europe, many people are fed the Orange Man Bad full force by the media. Orange Man is mostly Bad because he's harsh on the EU and on NATO members, and that's bad because he can't be mean to us! The so-called intellectual elite, our equivalent of rich upper class liberals, hate Trump because of his policies. Certain right wingers hate him because they're told to. But if you check comments on news articles, a lot of people do call the media propagandists out. Same with the Brexit situation and with the recent victory of Poland's Duda.
The media is making this out to be a referendum on religion and gay civil unions, because they can't comprehend there's a world beyond identity politics.
