My Dad had severe TDS about this, because MSNBC lied about the tax changes non-stop.
He changed jobs the year this went into effect, which also obfuscated the results to him. He was claiming he was paying MORE in taxes as at the end of the year because he didn't get as large of a refund as the year before. As if his refund actually represented his paid taxes, ridiculous. Because he was having less taxes taken out from his check week to week, he was actually paying less and just not getting a refund.
I had to I kept telling him to calculate his nominal taxes paid not go by your refund, that just represents what you overpaid. I spent like 2 hours explaining how the tax brackets worked and how the deductions benefited him. So he finally did the math for his 2019 taxes and compared it to 2016. His nominal taxes paid in 2019 was way lower despite making more money.
People are just so insanely ignorant on our tax structure, partly because it is pretty convoluted, and partly because no one actually teaches it. It's too easy for media to manipulate it into a false reality to fit their BS narrative.
