It's very easy, though there are a few pitfalls:
- the computer itself is sold alone, meaning it does not come with a power supply. Depending on the model, it needs at least 2 amps which most fast charging supplies have now (but that old cell charger probably doesn't). Also worth checking if your TV has a USB port.
- enabling SSH, HDMI involves modifying a config.txt file on the sdcard (so having an sdcard reader is a must-have).
- the pihole software depends on a static IP address, so while the DHCP assigned address from your router is unlikely to change it's recommended to modify your router to assign it one based on its MAC address.
- the admin password for the pihole web ui is only displayed once at the end of the software install, so it's easy to lose if you're not paying attention.
I think you'll find there's a lot of support and documentation on the rpi and pihole, and should use your disgust for the current web ecosystem as fuel for that journey ;)
