The Electors Clause, which is only applicable to presidential elections, does give the state legislatures the power to also determine the manner of appointing electors. It's unclear whether it'd be legal to create two different election systems, where the one for appointing electors is fully under state legislature control, but it looks like it might be. Or you could just not have elections at all anymore for President in certain states, and just let the legislature pick them.
