Germany didn't want war. It was a near impossibility to win fighting on two fronts but there was no other option as the soviet union was planning a massive invasion of Europe. They knew they could not fight a defensive war and thus had to strike first. They didn't have the resources or manpower to drag the war out and relied on operation barbarossa to succeed and collapse the soviet union within a few months and route those soldiers back to the western front.
In regard to WW1 the Germans again did not start this war and in fact were winning the war. Nobody had reached German soil and there was a stale mate on the front. It's actually very interesting. The ones who surrendered are referred to as the "November criminals" because they made a deal behind the scenes and sold out their own nation. That's a bit false actually. Hitler tried to avoid war as much as he could because he respected his fellow European nations. That's part of the reason the soldiers at Dunkirk were spared. He was well versed on history.
