My Uncle was ex-military and a policeman, he volunteered to oversee the Rhodesian indepedence referendum in the 60s.

First thing they had him do when he got to his camp was to get rid of all the old ww2 era LMG ammo. He spent the rest of the day blasting away at a nearby cliff face.

No one said you have to be smart to be a commie.

I'm no economics guy, so my take is just idle uneducated guessing.

We export both thermal and coking coal to the world.

In both categories China is our 2nd biggest importer.

Taking 2019 export numbers, China was 18% of our thermal coal exports at $4b, and 24% of coking at 9.7b.

Like you say, this impacts China not just Australia. They have to make up the short fall.

Personally, it is swings and roundabouts. The shortfall will be picked up else where. It's not that simple for another country to automatically increase coal exports by the amounts we are talking about over night yea?

If they increase exports to China, then in the short term it will be at someone else's expense?

I've also read that one of the "reasons" of the Australian coal ban, is China going more green in its energy production. This doesn't make sense, as they have just now signed a ~$2b deal with Indonesia to make up the Australian shortfall.

Why doesn't this make sense you say? Australian thermal coal is some of the 'cleanest' in the world. Comparing it to Indonesian thermal coal it has around 10% moisture compared to Indonesias 30% moisture.

What does this mean? You require less coal to be burnt for the same amount of energy produced.

Also, Australian coal has less ash, sulphur and other nasty elements, making it a 'better' option if you are going to use coal.

So, to summarise, commies are gonna commie.

spez: better paragraph spacing?

spezdispenced: nope.

I'm in no way making excuses, just simply responding to the "allowing their government to completely disarm them." It is not that cut and dry.

Do I agree with the stringent, heavy handed restrictions? Nope.

Restrictions have begun to relax in the 24 years since, so we have that going for us.

There is still an underground market, so criminal elements still have access to semi automatics. There are also 9 M72 LAWs out there in the wild some where.

For our American mates, Australia and China have been in a trade war for 2020 with it looking to continue into 2021.

They hit us with huge tariffs on barley and wine. Banned lobster and coal imports (while China is facing power shortages with 10's of millions freezing kek).

Apparently it is bad for our PM to call for an inquiry on the origins of the kong flu and banning huawei.

Yea, nah. It's not that hard to own a gun in Australia, you just have to join a shooting club, be a hunter/join a hunting club, be a farmer or for pest control.

We are restricted to categories based on the above as well. With magazine capacity restrictions etc. Handguns you need to participate in 8 shooting competitions a year.

According to a 2016 study, there were more guns in Australia than before the '96 ban. Of 3million+ firearms, 260k are estimated to be illegal/unlicensed.

It is more complicated than just a blanket "allowed their government to completely disarm them."

I was born in England, but left when i was 6. I spent 4 years in NZ but yea I'm in Aus.

New Zealand is cooler. It is further from the equator and fairly narrow, you look east or west and you aren't far from the coast either direction.

I think a combination of white guilt and post ww2 debt saw a rapid pull out of Africa of the European countries.

The local African economies, infrastructure and leadership had been developed for extraction of resources to Europe so the rapid pull out left huge deficits in local leadership and proper infrastructure which in turn allowed warlords to come in and prosper.

It will be interesting to see an audited trail of where this money ends up. Who am I kidding, the democrats won't even audit election ballets.
