Most of those Americans get W-2 income. And unless they go and mark up all their withholdings with HR they're going to be paying taxes throughout the year, taken out of their paycheck. Those people then file a return to either claim a standard deduction or itemize their deductions to get a tax refund or pay more in taxes if they didn't withhold enough throughout the year. So the person that started this thread is correct, if you want to do this you need to go claim everything on your W-9

It's the 4-2-1 problem, read up on that. I don't think they're referring to cooking and cleaning my friend. That 1 person supports her parents and potentially grandparents and when the 1 is out of job the entire family struggles.
Absolutely this happens all the time. The audit rate in this country is something like 1.3%. And if people that are owed refunds refuse to file that's just free money for the government bud.
