I dont know why the government has seized this power for itself. Why do they manage licenses for things like alcohol or even just trades. Im not even sure if this is conspiratorial anymore, but I think china has been funneling funding and narrative advancement in a direction to support civil strife. Their interests align with us having a civil war because they know thats the only way they can win a war with us.
The libertarian in me would agree with you. Im not really sure there is a principled argument against that. I think someone could make the national security argument but thats a very dangerous precedent.
This is what the chinese want. If there is ever a civil war, they will send their support to whatever side aligns with their interests. It happens all the time in civil wars. There is no way there would be no international involvement. It would be bad. Really bad.

That cant really work in reality. That would mean bidenbros could come brigade here and there would be nothing we could do.
