It's a type of mark in many areas of the country. You can't participate in society without it and there is enormous pressure to conform. But it's not universal in American yet. In some areas you can and will be arrested for not wearing it. Is it the mark of the beast referred to in the Bible? Doesn't seem likely because it's not universally enforced. If a person isn't religious or if they don't believe in Christianity they would never believe in a mark anyways, even if it all the signs were there and blatantly obvious.
