Dear XXXXXXX

Thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts on the 2020 federal elections. Understanding your views helps me to better represent Florida in the United States Senate, and I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

The 2020 federal elections took place on November 3, 2020, with many states allowing early and mail-in ballots in order to facilitate safe voting in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Due to the increased use of mail-in ballots and close electoral margins, several states were unable to immediately determine the winner of their election. In other states, electoral litigation as well as recounts are ongoing.

I believe that every lawfully cast vote should be counted, and that everything possible should be done to ensure our elections are protected. No partisan outcome is more important than the preservation of the credibility of our democratic system.

The legitimacy of our republic requires public confidence in our elections. We should support allowing the post-election process provided for in our laws to work. Our election laws provide the ability to call for recounts in close elections. These laws generally provide candidates the right to contest votes they believe to be unlawfully cast and the right to present evidence of fraud in court if it exists. The only way the outcome of this election is going to be widely accepted is through the post-election process provided in our laws.

Both Democratic and Republican candidates have availed themselves of these rights many times, including in this election. President Trump is well within his legal rights to pursue these rights under the law. Taking days to count legally cast votes is not fraud. Court challenges to votes cast after the legal voting deadline is not voter suppression.

Faith in our elections is as important as the outcome. Preserving it requires not allowing the outcome to be decided by either the media or a candidate. As I said in September, it may take longer than usual to know the outcome of this election, but it will be a valid one and at noon on January 20, 2021, we will peacefully swear in the winner of the presidential election like we have for more than two centuries.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve you as your United States Senator. I will keep your thoughts in mind as I consider these issues and continue working to ensure America remains a safe and prosperous nation.

Sincerely,

Marco Rubio U.S. Senator
