Here's the thing for non-white people.
White people don't sit around thinking about that word. It means as much to us as cracker does - nothing. To YOU it means something. To us it's just a word we don't say to hurt YOU.
Listen, I can find so many ways to insult you, in the moment, that I don't need that word to hurt your feelings. I know it might but I can pick out a metric ton of OTHER, BETTER, more hurtful insults in the moment. People my age grew up with comedy central.
If you are a stranger I'd be most likely to pick on something asymmetric on you (since that's ugly) or something in excess like gaudy makeup or glitter clothing or 2 pair of sunglasses. I could pick on your sloppy kids or just the way your hair looks.
