If you do go shortwave, get one that has SSB (single side band) sometimes featured as a BFO(beat frequency oscillator.) also continuous tuning from 0-30mhz. All of that’s standard on appropriate ham radios. SSB will allow you to receive amateur radio and some data signals. Just makes for more interesting listening.
Mine’s a realistic dx-440 ... not current at all but you can still find them on eBay.
So far as a ham set I’m a big fan of the yaesu ft-817 (currently reissued as the 818.) It’s really full features and portable. Not powerful at all, but you don’t need power to listen, and if you’re stationary there are ways to maximize efficiency if you’re reaching out. Plus it’ll run on a 12v battery all day, or even 16 AAs in a pinch (no freaking lie!)
