You're conflating two different terms here. A republic is a form of government that creates a group of "representatives" from a voting bloc, and these representatives legislate policy (instead of a singular monarch for example). Democracy is an ideology that INFORMS governments (primarily republics) to take everyone's 'voice' into account. The US is therefore a DEMOCRATIC republic. You can only really have two kinds of republics: a democratic republic or an oligarchic republic. In a democratic republic the voting bloc is every citizen (generally of a certain age) while in an oligarchic republic the voting bloc is a small group of powerful individuals generally with the same policy prescriptions. These people can also be the supposed representatives of the republic itself.
