This. Here's how the thought process goes: 1) I have no opinion on X. 2) I like person A, and they say Y about X. 3) I'll take person A's opinion about X as my own without any further research, because I like them. 4) Person B contradicts person A.
NPC denies, and repeats Y. Person B isn't presenting an argument, they are attacking person A and the NPC. It's not about facts, logic, learning, discourse, or any of that - it's about defending themselves, because they need to like and admire person A, even if it's some celebrity they've never met.
