When I was 16, my dad used to do labor jobs for the socialites in our town.
While working with him for some Doctor, and his wife; She saw some of my drawings and started asking me to draw things for her (And oh, she paid!)... I started making thousands a week drawing basically practice doodles, and concept sketches. (My dad was both pissed, and jealous - he felt like I was "Cheating" honest pay - I was merely exploiting the wealthy.)
The real kick to me, her Son was in an art collage and, while I don't want to overly critique an artform I don't understand, I thought his work was shit... It was the exact kind of vapid, hallow, conformity of "Liberal Arts" you'd Expect. "It's Expressive" "You just don't understand" - No, my dude, it's just shit.
At the time, I was mostly doing fashion designs; I'm shocked she actually hired someone to make some of my work, So, I'm kind of proud of that.
Really, if your good enough at what you do (Any artform), and you put yourself out there; it's not that hard to find work, plenty of people actually do need/want to hire an artist for different things. Making it a sustainable career is another story. I personally like doing it as a hobby, but I'd never want to "Sell out" to a company; such as getting a job where I have to draw 24/7 and drone away for some corporation to harvest my work. (Nothing but horror stories of ex Disney animators, and Disney stealing their work.)
