Video hosting is frankly an unsolved problem, at least to my mind. Hosting videos on S3 is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than self hosting. Every other thing Amazon does I can do cheaper on my own hardware — video is a problem.
We can beat Amazon with P2P here — but these subscription services with paywall models are not sustainable on P2P, certainly not without elaborate encryption schemes.
