Germany too was a place where liberal ideals flourished in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Great War and the economic depression (way earlier than in the us bc of Versailles Treaty) were the death sentence for the fragile democracy. If you have 30% of people voting on the fringes you will have a military coup or a civil war, everywhere. And I got to be honest, the us is heading for that conflict.
