How does killing your own people, who did not participate in a guerrila attack in a drone strike help? NSA/ black ops teams they have way less resources than you imagine in comparison to the population.
If the people turn against the government, it doesn't matter the military power they bear because the people operating that equipment all have a stake in society as well.
Also secession may be easier than you think. If texas or a number of states secedes and seizes all nukes in their territory they could prevent invasion indefinitely.

A formal large military force was defeated by colonists. Colonists who, by the way didn't feel the need to face them in formal battle on the field.
These well organized, very well trained troops, who fought all over the world, and who spent their whole lives training (not just a couple weekends in woods or target practice) were defeated by a bunch of uneducated farmers with black powder rifles.
By the time the national guard shows up patriots should have dispersed back into the population and begun planning another sabotage or ambush. This country could easily be ground to a screeching halt and they wouldn't be able to do shit without killing innocents and destroying it entirely.
