the kind of person a gay or lesbian or straight person is attracted to does not change, even if they make a transgender change (change from presenting themself from one gender to the other).
if a person changes which gender they assert themselves as being ('goes transgender'), then any existing partner assesses whether the person who now presents themselves by the sex opposite to the one they presented as when the relationship starts, is still someone they are compatible with. The partner either continues the relationship or ends it.
The trans person would still wish to continue the relationship because who they are attracted to hasn't changed..but if their partner isn't, for example, Bi, then that's likely not going to happen, because the change likely is a deal-breaker for them. they probably still love and care for the person who went trans, but can't continue the relationship as if nothing has changed. there's likely a loss of sexual attraction.
Its the same as any big change someone in a relationship might make - it likely causes the partner to re-assess whether the relationship works for them. Like say you came out as a lib.... your wife would probably leave you. You don't get to decide to 'retain' her.
