If states refuse to certify or overturn their own certification and it goes to the state legislature to appoint electors, then it doesnt need to go to supreme court. It all depends on how things go down in various states, some may go to supreme court, some may not certify.
Virtually nothing, the difference is in play style mostly, and just what they call it.
