There were any number of movies and TV shows from the 1940s - 1980s about how there are creatures that look exactly like us, but aren't. And the big problem was always about how to tell who was a normal human and who was really a destructive monster.
Several episodes of the original Star Trek and Twilight Zone dealt with this. The two movies you mentioned above are great examples. Invaders from Mars, too.

I think now that Trump's "Operation Warp Speed" to get a vaccine out there was just a way of calling their bluff. And it seems to have worked, because all we hear now is that you STILL have to have lockdowns, wear masks, keep schools closed, etc., even WITH the vaccine.
