The French confidence in their defenses against Germany in WW2 was based not on what Germany had and was doing but on what the French thought war had always been. There was lots of evidence the Germans had new tanks and new ways of using them after Poland but the French refused to accept and prepare for grim reality. 2. Adaptation; The afghans adapted their old school guerilla tactics and added new tech like stinger missiles into the mix. The Russians used the challenges of the time to develop the AK47 and many new tank and plane designs. They also adapted their strategy and turned even massive losses into victory by never losing sight of the great war because of a loss of a small battle. They knew how things were interconnected and where to make a stand that mattered, where to pull back and regroup. Just look at the impact of the battle of Stalingrad or of the one sniper who covered a street and blocked the advance of an entire German army division by himself for days, slowing them down so winter could catch up with them.
3. Most importantly, pride and grit. The Afghans and the Russians were proud to die for the country they believed in. They simply did not have it in them to cower and live under the yoke of a foreign flag. They bore suffering with a stoic pride for their country.

Methinks perhaps the blue counties are already occupied France and the red counties have a chance to be Afghanistan or Russia if they realize the situation they're in. If rural America and be as strong as rural Afghanistan and rural Vietnam and rural Russia , it can live up to the proud vision of its founders.
