This is exactly what's happening but the jobs aren't going to the Midwest United States. They're going overseas. Company sets up a local entity, pays the worker in their home country to avoid Tax and Visa issues. American office workers now compete in the global labor pool against the local wage scale. I tried to explain this to my colleagues who are really enjoying siting by their pool at home and farting around all day in between Skype meetings. The same ones that demand an unobtainable "zero COVID risk profile" when we discuss reopening. The same ones saying things like "no, we're MORE productive at home" while Netflix streams in the background. The same ones who will try to login one day soon only to to find out their credentials have been revoked and they have been sent a fedex package to return their laptop. Meanwhile, a new face pops up in a box in the Teams meeting screen and everyone goes about doing the work at hand.
