I’ve always had a thing for monitoring space weather and satellite tracking... very, VERY amateur.... but one of my favorite things to do is monitor the planets. The way they’re positioned right now, on a clear night, when you can see Jupiter and Saturn and then Mars not far off to the left, with the Sun just under the horizon, it allows you to see the plane on which the planets revolve around the sun. You can almost imagine a line angling through the sky on which the planets travel, and if the moon is out you can see exactly where the sun is positioned based on the angle of light reflecting off of it. An especially cool time to view is just before dawn, when Venus is visible in the still starry sky, but you can also see the edge of sunlight peaking over the east horizon... it’s my favorite time because it allows you to essentially see the position of the sun while still viewing the stars/planet Venus in the sky.... which Venus reflecting the exact same light that you’re also seeing creep over the mountains to your east. I’m sure it’s boring to some people, but I find it absolutely fascinating and could probably stare at it for hours if it would last that long.
