To be fair, it's definitely preferable to have chicken pox as a child. It's highly contagious and spreads easily, which is why most people had it as children (before there was a vaccine). Once a person has had it, the virus (varicella-zoster) becomes inactive. Later in life, if for some reason the virus reactivates, it manifests as shingles. Shingles is not contagious as shingles, but a person who has never had chicken pox can get the chicken pox from someone who has shingles. But, chicken pox is much more deadly in adults, which is why people used to have pox parties and such to make sure that their kids got it when they were young.

But now there has been a vaccine since the 90s, and no one is allowed to get the chicken pox anymore, since maybe 100 people died every year from it. They think the vaccine may last 10-20 years, but people may need boosters if they don't have natural immunity, because you definitely don't want the pox as an adult.

Join the Lutherans! (LCMS... stay away from the ELCA). We're sort of like Catholic Lite and you don't have to give anything up for Lent!

I work at a church in an admin position (LCMS Lutheran). Most in the church community are aware of this decline which has been going on since the 90s. The church I work at peaked (as far as attendance) in the early 2000s, plateaued for a while, and then started to decline about 10 years ago. We have lost about 50% of our people in the past 8 years. (Various factors involved including people just moving out of state because our state sucks, etc).

Fortunately the LCMS has remained unwoke and Bible-based. And, horrors, we don't allow female pastors.

Unfortunately, in my opinion, the downside of remaining unwoke is that the church is stuck in the past in other areas. I'm talking about the homemade newsletters with clipart from the 80s, outdated buildings with mismatched decor (because somebody donated it so we have to keep it there forever!), and a general attitude of cliques and "we've always done it this way so it can't be changed" even when there is no Biblical reason. This can be a turnoff to younger people if they weren't raised in an LCMS church, and a new modern church with a coffee shop inside is much more welcoming, even if their teaching is somewhat off....

Many churches don't realize (or want to admit) they have a problem until they look around and only the gray-hairs are left, and by then it's probably too late...

Does anyone actually believe this crap? I don't have kids, but I have five nieces and nephews, and I can assure you they have no idea/couldn't care less about anything in politics and the news. Their main concerns are baby Yoda, Shopkins, unicorns, and poop. Lots of poop.

But the most important thing is virtue signaling to your internet friends that you CARE about other people. So, you're not selfishly going to work and selfishly going to the grocery store, and even though you got your vaccine already, you're still going to wear a mask because you wouldn't want to maybe possibly transmit the virus to someone who might pass it to someone else who might pass it to someone else who might get sick or die or have lifelong organ damage or something. And also, if you continue to wear a mask then nobody will mistake you for being a racist bigoted trump supporter.

My county has had less than one covid death a day in the past year, and well over half of those at least were nursing home and rehab facilities. So, totally worth shutting everything down and putting numerous stores and restaurants out of business. /s

LOL. Pritkzger literally just signed HB 3653 (Criminal Justice and Police Reform Bill) like yesterday, which is just going to make Illinois worse than it already is. Maybe the "lawmakers" should have focused on not ramming that bill through instead of stupid video games.

Lol. I mean, I don't even wear a coat if it's at least 30 degrees out. And as soon as it hits 50, I'm back to wearing flip flops. So, it would probably have to be -20 for me to think about maybe possibly wearing a mask outside to keep my face warm. (Obv. I'm in the Midwest)

they pay for all their kids shit, phones, cars etc. they even pay 21k a year for their grandkid to go to a really nice expensive private school>

Well, that might be part of the problem...

Yeah, that statement goes both ways. I can't believe the number of young healthy people with no risk factors who have locked themselves in their houses and are afraid of the grocery store.

Why? Was he going to get covid and die before he died? I don't understand this business of not letting dying people see their families.

I'm Gen X and I had a hard time finding jobs in high school and college. The few that I did get taught me something though: that I needed to go to school or figure out what to do with my life because I definitely didn't want to end up as an incompetent 45-year-old manager at Burger King or JCPenney.

Lol. I heard a story today. A guy I work with owns several rental units. One of the tenants called him complaining the heat wasn't working. (It's roughly 0 degrees right now). He went to check it out, and turns out the guy had put duct tape over all of the vents for "privacy". Apparently not even enough brain power to put those two things together.

This is what drives me crazy. I see so many comments saying (mostly on reddit): "If you can't afford to pay employees a living wage, then you don't deserve to be in business".

Nobody starts a business with the goal of paying employees. (Some people claim they do, like wanting to "give back to the community" etc. But it's mostly BS) Businesses are started to make money. Hiring employees is a byproduct.

True. I used to work on a post-partum unit and so did my mom. Always a fun time when the mom and "dad" are both light-skinned redheads, and the baby has light skin but clear African-American features.... oops. Lol.

Straight to the recycle bin!

And for the record, I am def not the "Black History Program Coordinator", we don't have one, and our organization does not celebrate black history month (or any other months or secular holidays).

Back in the early 90s my dad worked for a large yellow and black company and there was a massive union strike that went on for months. My dad and the other office workers were pulled into the factories on a rotational basis to keep things running. The machine that he worked on had been set to the slowest possible speed by the previous (union) worker. Once my dad learned how to run it he was producing parts almost twice as fast.

The workers on strike would also write letters to the newspaper with these ridiculous claims. One guy said that [big evil company] had fired him for fixing a poster on a bulletin board that had fallen down. Another guy claimed he was fired for picking a tomato in his garden.

Needless to say, I don't exactly have a super positive view of unions....

Yep. I can't understand why people can't see that's what's going to happen.

Most of the older boomer types I know are aware this is all a lie. The younger Gen Xers that I went to college with are the ones spewing hate and falling all over themselves for Biden.

And on a side note - in my area, the Boomers are the ones who are coming to church in person, and the younger healthier Millennials/Xers are the ones hiding at home from the scary Covid and having groceries delivered.

I live in Illinois and they already started the gradual increase to $15.00/hr a year or two ago, which will effectively almost double the pay of the lowest-paid workers. It just went up to $11 on Jan 1, and will go up another dollar every year until it hits $15. There is a preschool/daycare where I work, and they sent out letters to the parents telling them tuition rates are going up because of the minimum wage increase. (and they will probably have to go up every year).

Of course, those of us making over $15 aren't going to see our pay go up the same amount. I only make a few dollars more, and didn't get a raise at all this year. None of us did.
