Kelo vs. New London ( 2005 ) was a case of eminent domain .It dealt with privately owned real estate taken by the City of New London for development on a river front by a private , for profit company. The SCOTUS ruled that it was not a violation of eminent domain b/c it would benefit the city at large with jobs , tax assessments . etc. The exact wording of the 5th Amendment stipulates " public use " ,i.e. road , bridge , hospital , school , railroad , airport , etc. SCOTUS interpreted meaning to be " public benefit " , a huge error that opened the door for exploitation by for-profit corporations under the guise of providing monetary benefits to the municipality as outlined above.The seized property is now a municipal refuse / storage lot because Pfizer moved their proposed campus to another locale , thus nullifying the whole real estate development scheme that was the justification for the seizure.The families never got their property back.
