While I agree with the general sentiment that dictators should overall not be glorified, the smearing against Pinochet in the last decades is the product of leftist propaganda. If the media had put in half the effort they put into exposing Pinochet´s faults as they did for leftist dictators around the globe, communism and socialism would be just a popular as national socialism is nowadays.

He was by no means a saint and had people murdered because of their political affiliation, which imo is wrong regardless of the affiliation.

However, he was not a genocidal maniac as most portray him to be. He did not usurp power from a benevolent and prosperous democracy. He usurped power from a country that was in ruin and continued a downward spiral. Hyperinflation, rationing of basic products and food, etc.... I.e. classic socialism.

Was it legitimate that he took over power by use of force? No, probably not. But legitimacy, popular vote (which Allende only had 1/3rd of mind you, and other such values lose their importance really quick when you´re having trouble putting food on the table.
