Mine was indeed on silent and I've not updated my phone this year. You can bypass the forced update by not telling it to postpone or anything just tab into another open app or long touch a setting icon when you drag down and go to its setting then hit home and wallah.

I'd hope all this is at least having an impact. My father was like that, I'd talk "conspiracy" with him all the time growing up and he'd dismiss it or laugh.
