I'd say that most of the "Modern Day" Japanese anime / "culture" is more of a Japanese export than anything. Yes theres Japanese anime "fans" but they're not in anyway comparable to those of other countries. Especially here in the US our weebs / otakus are just the worst (overly obsessive).
It's comparable to going to Hawaii... their culture is an export as well. People have a belief that its all lays, hula dancing, and surfing, but a normal islander's life isn't that.. it's pretty normal. especially on the non touristy parts. What im getting at is anime isn't life in Japan

Haven't been back to Japan in quite a few years, have family over there. I can't imagine the utter disdain they currently have for the West. It was bad enough when all the tourists from the West were all just a bunch of otakus and weebs. Japan gets the worst of the worst as tourists and nowadays with everybody being gay, non binary, and trans i'd assume there is a greater contempt for us. A lot of older Japanese are very conservative in their ways, they don't even agree with tattoos. It's just disgusting sometimes that we try to push our bullshit onto other countries and don't just leave these cultures alone.
