Crisis - COVID19. It's the cure-all excuse for ANY policy you want. It allows you to restrict people's movement and disallow certain people from organizing. DC mayor that made an exemption for travel from Lewis' funeral, but not anyone else. NO policy is TOO extreme now ✔

I'm sure you know more about your country, so I won't pretend to tell you why YOUR government did what it did.
As you mentioned, I don't think there are many Americans that look at Sweden as a bastion of liberty... but we do look at you guys with envy with the way you guys reacted to COVID.
We could see the OBVIOUS trend with the mortality rate back in February/March(it has been dropping more and more since the start), BEFORE any lockdowns occurred in the states, and yet we still locked down.
When I say that Sweden seems to be following the science with regards to COVID, I remember a few months ago, that some higher up, when questioned about Sweden running an experiment by not locking down, the repsonse from that person was something to the effect of, "It is not US that is running an experiment, it is the rest of the world." I remember this statement blowing me away at the time.
So maybe the lockdowns didn't happen for the reason you say, but nonetheless it seems we had PLENTY of data to realize the lockdowns didn't make sense(back in March).
Similarly with these masks, the swedes seem to not be pushing it... simply because there is no science suggesting it makes sense to do so. I think health officials in Norway are of a similar mind with mask policy?
But make no mistake about it... what is happening in the USA is 99% POLITICAL at this point. There may be some people who are generally fearful, but the majority of this is political. Already during the DNC convention, they're already trying to pin the economy woes on Trump, despite the fact that the MAJORITY of the problems are due to democratic mayors and governors shuttering their economies.
In the end, Sweden was right, the USA was wrong, and despite all of the data we have today, we have STILL not adjusted course.
Whelp... if that's how one wants to categorize it, then i'm fine with it.
It is time people face the consequences of their electoral decisions.
