And all affiliated sites are strange in the sense that there are no people associated with the sites. No names. Key West and Florida Keys (Monroe County, Florida) Announced today they will be closed to visitors THROUGH the month of May. Governor DeSantis TOOK TOO LONG and did not make his recommendations public fast enough, so Key West closed.

TLDR: I pitched a novel, useful disease detection software system to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. They were not interested in detecting and monitoring diseases. They were interested in getting mentions in the press/broadcast media.

About 10 years ago the US was dealing with a "Swine flu epidemic". My background is in data analysis (Masters degree in Statistics) and somebody asked me if I could do anything with CDC data. So I combined their call-center data (location of caller and type of disease they were calling about) with demographic data (ethnicities in the caller’s location from US Census data). On top of that some statistical modeling . The result was the ability to predict where the disease would go next, based on locations that had similar demographic/economic characteristics. to where the disease had already landed
The system worked well, so I went to the CDC in Atlanta. I was certain the system was something they had not seen before. I showed them the predictive capability and also showed them that the swine flu was not just “mexican” - as was being reported. It was also Asian.
They weren’t interested. They said there job was to get press mentions. They wanted help getting more mentions in newspapers, more tv and radio reports. They wanted help getting their words/message out. The ability to pinpoint the next locations that might be in danger from a certain disease, that was not interesting to them. I did not get a 2nd meeting.
Six months after I had the “Asian” information in regards to the Swine Flu, I awoke to find a picture of a cute Asian kid in a mask on the cover of the NY Times. Guess what had been discovered six months later? Hey, the swine flu has an Asian component! (I don’t think this info came from me, I thin someone else finally found it and for whatever reasons they decided to publish it)
A couple of years later some part of the US federal government put out a “Request for Proposal” (RFP) for vendors who could develop a disease tracking capability. I sent in my information and told them, “Hey, me and Google are the only people who have already developed a system, and mine is better than theirs” (it was at the time).
I received NO response from them. I finally contacted them and said “Did you receive my application?”. Yes, the organization (maybe the NIH, I don’t recall) said. They received it. Never heard anything from them.
Epilogue:
That’s what I’m thinking about this morning. Obama and company definitely used the IRS for political purposes (see Tea Party). They definitely used the FISA court against Trump. They used the bankruptcy court to pay off the UAW unions (see GM bankruptcy scandal).
They definitely would use the CDC for political purposes and it looks like they are.

The last time I lost my job was after a few months at a tech company in New York City. I had done such a good job that they asked me to move to London to start their office there. It was a big, “plum” job offer. But I loved NYC and had no intention of leaving. I told them this. The guy I said no to fired me one week later. Apparently he had quite an ego.
So there I was in my expensive apartment in Manhattan with no income. I had some skills (marketing, data, technology) and enough money in the bank to last a few months. I said, “F these people. It’s time I trusted MYSELF”. Then I started my own data analytics company. I figured I could do the same work I had been doing, but offer it directly to the end clients instead of through an agency. I could offer my services at a discount, and still make more than I was before – and spend less time doing it. Or so I thought.
It turns out… I was right. That’s how I started the best ten years of my life.
I didn’t know how to market my services, but I found a book that was appropriate – and sat in a chair for two weeks with it. I read and did the exercises. By the time I was finished I had all the basic marketing material I needed. I spent another week putting up a website
Then I started pounding the digital pavement – answer craigslist ads and doing other things (as suggested in the book) that took time, but after a month I landed my first real project. Receiving the $5,000 check when I finished – and knowing it was ALL for me (except for the cut for the thieves in DC, NY, and NYC) was a great, great feeling. And it was one I would NOT have had if I didn’t lose my job.
I answered an ad from a company that wanted to hire me full time. I said no thanks, but I’ll work “private labeled” for you until you find a full time person. That got me 6 months of projects. And many additional contacts, including one that lasted for ten years, bringing me plenty of money.

Another win user wondered this question in another thread. I just looked at google trends for "flu" for the last 5 years. There was a big spike in searches for "flu" last year (compared to other years) in December.
This past December the spike (in the USA) started around December 15th. Win user medtex1 (says he is a paramedic) says tests for Flu types A and B on patients were coming back negative, meaning people had something but not the common A and B strains of influenza. This could mean the corona virus was here in December.
Analysis shows searches for "flu" increased in the USA two weeks before France and Italy.
