I'd been noticing my phone battery getting drained faster than usual so I went to check battery consumption and found a new program called "Exposure Notifications." Hm, I never installed, nor turned on, nor even knew this had installed itself and been turned on without my permission.
How it works: "Your iphone uses bluetooth to keep a log throughout the day. Your phone looks for ios and android phones that have exposure notifications turned on and keeps a rolling 14 day log of their shared identifiers." So your phone now has a log from promiscuously broadcasting and listening on bluetooth for any other phones squawking out their unique hash and keeping a log of that for what they claim is only 14 days of everybody's phone that you've come within about 30 feet of... So that you can be notified if any of said people report they've gotten a positive covid test in the last 14 days.
I remember some months ago reading about software tech like this and the maker of that video said the back end is designed to be anonymous. <puts on tinfoil hat> How much you want to bet that's not true? If the back end of this can identify you by some unique hash identifier, what's stopping them from making a database of that with your ESN to identify you and being able to track you down, or see where you've been via this ad hoc bluetooth web.
They could probably just subpoena the cellular providers to see what towers you've been near, but this would increase the accuracy of WHO you've been around so you can be identified as someone that has been in close proximity of someone accused of wRoNgThInK and be sentenced to be re-educated if you've been influenced by their domestic terroristic thoughts.
