THEY were never going to let Trump win at the ballot box stage. "Not making that mistake twice." The entire "vote" was always going to be rigged. Trump surely knew this. He was never playing to win that phase (even though he did win anyway). He's been playing the "win in later stages" game the whole time, since those are the only open fields of battle.
Classic misdirection Houdini shit. The man is always underestimated because he's always playing a different game than the one you are.
We may not yet know how he wins these phases, but I think we can be confident he's been planning on this EXACT fight the entire time.
