Once police declare an unlawfully assembly aka a riot, anyone in the area not leaving is subject to arrest. Basically we can detain/arrest anyone but we go after the biggest agitator's which would be this dumbass.

There is a big difference between intruders on private land/trespassing and an intruder in a structure/burglary.
You are perfectly fine confronting people inside your private gated property but you can't just shoot people with impunity unless you can articulate how/why they posed a threat of death or great bodily injury to you.
This is also gated private property which has a higher expectation of privacy vs a front yard open to the street where the public can freely enter.
This is based on CA law where I work tho so might be bit different there. The people defending their property did nothing wrong, hopefully the gov there don't try and burn them.
