The original way race was defined was that it was a group of closely related ethnic groups that tended to have similar characteristics, skin color being only an easy (but inaccurate) gauge of race. Sicilians are genetically close to other Europeans, and thus are white. Other ethnic groups may have white skin, but aren't white, such as Jewish people (they're semites).
