well i'm a gen x, i think, and i've just put 3 kids through college, last one is heading into senior year this year and 2 went to private universities (christian) and the last one is in an out of state public univ and we did it without a single loan, THANK GOD. my spouse and i came out of public university loaded with debt and we swore not to do that to our kids but the kids helped - academic and athletic scholarships paid the way mostly and the money we set aside did the rest. it's too fucking expensive. They're all in STEM fields so at least they're making good money now.
I think we will be drilling a well sometime soon and putting a well house over it. I want to be more self sufficient. Plus a catchment system for capturing water off the metal barn and workshop. And a bigger generator system Since power loss was the real problem. Wish I had fireplaces on each end of the house but thanking God we had a big one in the living room. Kept that fed 24/7. Ran out of our usual amount by day 3 so went out into the pastures and started cutting down the dead wood so at least it wasn’t green. We have such crappy water here that we normally have about 25 gallons of RO water stored normally so that was good. Definitely more prepping in our future.
I’m also in Texas and yes, it went pretty much like this for us also. Including checking on neighbors and helping out where we could. The UTV wouldn’t work in the extreme cold so had to put on the heavy snow gear and haul supplies to neighbors. Plus getting water out to livestock. We didn’t have all our pipes freeze so had water and septic ok.
We also had solar lights. The kind u hang outside. I’d charge them during the day when there was sun and they helped at night when we had no electricity.
Neighbors helped neighbors. Btw, the ring app on my phone helped me connect with nearby neighbors that needed help. I don’t do Facebook so that app helped a lot.
Same. Most of my maternal family are teachers, basically all a bunch of libtards and commies and he’s right. They’re the cheapest people I’ve ever met and are rolling in money but think the govt should provide for everyone and never donate to charities. Horrible ppl. But hey they love the lgbt and pedos.
I’m in central Texas. In same boat but in country so have a fireplace and wood galore but have friends I’m Trying to convince to come out here and stay with us. They’ve had no water since Thur and no electricity since yesterday. It’s not good. We also lived in Alaska and luckily have a large 4x4 so we feel prepared but it’s scary. Can’t get gas or groceries since stores don’t have electricity either. Got kids in Dallas and Houston in the city that we are worried about
Ya. I’m in this mess. Power has been going out Been arguing with the spouse that we need to be more off grid and should think about a solar system for the house. I would hope they would have some built in warming cables to melt snow in case of days like this. I have a small system on my barn and it’s not covered in snow and working great. Pipes r frozen too. We should all think about getting some Percentage of our energy off grid tbh.
well they need to stop that crap, those fuckers(twitter) are evil.
