What did you expect? In the nineties NJ was a "Republican" controlled state - both the state assembly and the Governor were Rs.
What happened? Christie Whitman was an unmitigated disaster - her first week in office their was some scandal involving race discrimination and black churches (I don't really remember all the details) that effectively neutered her entire term in office. The Rs in the assembly might as well have been Dems and they learned the hard way if the voter's choice is Dem or Dem lite their going to go Dem every time.
In the space of twenty years NJ went from a red state to a blue hellhole - if you were expecting the Republican "leadership" in NJ to grow some balls and stand for something you were kidding yourself because they never have and never will.
