Because a single messenger from a state could be intercepted and the results doctored, a group of anonymous electors are chosen instead to represent the value of each state.
The electors are chosen ahead of time so that anonymity can be confirmed when they arrive at the capitol. All parties involved have their own electors chosen, to make sure they vote for their party.
What we are seeing is a duel between both parties' electors to be recognized by the VP.
Both sides have sent their own electors. Which means it goes to Pence to decide whose electors to count. If he does this, however, he also opens himself up to being voted on separate from Trump, which could result in a Harris VP and Trump POTUS, not good.
Instead, he can send it to a contingent election and the state houses will decide the president. If they fail to garner majority, it goes to 1 vote per state, and Trump easily wins that.
Since Hillary and her ilk ran the same election fraud, they would have only served to expose their own scheme and lost this election and every one past it as well.
This process only aids the party who is not guilty of election shenanigans, as was the intent.

If states could non-amicably secede, they could use secession threats to hold the country hostage every 2-4 years. Nothing would ever get done in that environment, and internal war would always linger.
The Civil War answered that question once and for all: "We are One Nation. Secession must only occur if everyone is OK with it. If someone disputes, no secession can possibly occur without bloodshed. Now we are clear on those terms, there should be no more talk of secession."

Additionally, you need to know the real reason for the Civil War. Slaves alone weren't enough to be a major concern, as no one really saw a path to free them and keep the nation intact. No, the final straw that broke the camel's back for the Civil War was the Norther States and their actions against the Southern States.
The South had a ton of manpower and were the belly of agriculture and exporting raw materials for widescale production. What they didn't have were factories. The South wanted to put up factories so they not only could be the source of raw materials but also the producer of textiles and other goods. Since the North was almost entirely reliant on their factories, this cut into their power structure.
The North then used the federal government, Lincoln, to press down on the South's ability to put up new factories, effectively saying that only the North reserved the right to have them. Arguments could be made that they knew they couldn't compete with a factory that was staffed entirely by slaves, and those arguments are well founded. Their actions, however, were very questionable.
That's what really sparked the Civil War - who owned production. Freeing of the slaves is a revisionist history angle that the North used to justify gimping the South of factories and industry.
I'm not saying slavery is a good thing, I'm just saying that it wasn't reason enough for the Nation to go to war. Freeing the Slaves was just a power play to ensure the North kept all the power and money, and less so about actual human rights.
The goal right now, as is has been the whole time, is to totally invalidate the electoral college process for these swing states.

Okay, so Texas filed a case suing the 4 swing states, PA, WI, MI, and GA. Everyone's hopes got really high then. The case pursued the states on their last-minute change to the election law by the executive and judicial branches when it lawfully could only be done by their legislative branches. Solid case, as fraud only needs to be possible to swing the election, not proven. Since it is a matter between states, it went straight to the SCOTUS, dodging all the corrupt lower courts.
Other states joined Texas and even others joined the 4 swing states with Amici Briefs, which is about as effective as a thumbs up.
Trump intervened in the case, meaning he sought relief from damages.
6 states joined Texas with intention to intervene, which means to seek their own damages.
The SCOTUS threw the case out on procedure, saying Texas didn't have standing and some other semantic BS.
Some believe Trump's goal is to exhaust all legal and court attempts to stop the election steal before being able to use the Insurrection act and a 2018 Executive Order on foreign interference in the election that allows him to freeze all financial and property assets of anyone involved in the scheme. It's yet to be decided if that's gonna happen anytime soon. December 18th is a possible deadline for this action.

There is an Executive Order Trump signed in 2018 that allows him to freeze all money and assets of anyone found to be involved with foreign interference of the election.
He has no more than 45 days after the election to receive a brief from key players in his cabinet and other Executive offices on the evidence they have found.
After that, he can use the authority of the EO to cut the financial balls of anyone implicated in the evidence, including those who received donations or donated to compromised individuals or knew about the election interference.
He has another 45 day window to act after the first meeting.
Honestly, I think the meeting Esper was excluded from was the actual brief date, since they have no more than 45 days to brief him. Which means, we may not see action on the 18th but rather 45 days out from that original brief.
