You will get a bit more velocity from the longer barrel, around an extra 200 fps for 115 grain bullets. A 9mm carbine is a fine weapon for close range defense, easy to use, fast followup shots. Something with a much higher velocity and flatter trajectory will make it a lot easier to hit out beyond 100 yards though.
