Reconstruction didn't work for one reason Confederate errrr Democrat leaders were allowed back into positions of power in the south and created the Jim Crow laws. That is the one major Mistake IMO of both Lincoln and US Grant. Confederate leadership should of been made to pay for the 750k dead but for the most part were given amnesty in the name of "healing" they didn't even wait for Lincoln's corpse to get cold.
States rights was some of the issue but the North's economic ascension was a direct threat to the south (since the start of the nation the south was THE BREADWINNER of the republic) and slavery was tied directly to that. Industrialization then invention of the steam engine etc and the southern states saw the writing on the wall.
Instead of adapting they chose to fight. States Rights+slavery+ economic envy vs the right of the country to survive as one. Remember this THE GOP FOR ITS FIRST 40 YEARS WAS CONSIDERED THE PROGRESSIVE OF THE TWO POLITICAL PARTIES.
