I know about all those. Racial tensions died down in large part between the 60s and the 90s (30 years can elicit a lot of change, in case you weren't aware). Nobody gave a shit about "white on black" violence in the 90s, nobody viewed police as their enemy until gangster rap started catching on. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton were viewed as lunatics by most Americans, holdovers from the violent 60s, and most people admitted that the US would never have a black president and were fine with that. Obama thrust racism back onto center stage with his gangster rap presidency.
People will always talk about race as a clear distinction between social groups, and that obviously that didn't start in the 60s, of course I'm not disputing that.
