Check the reddit frontpage. I'm dumbfounded at the turnaround. The top level comments are not the groupthink I expect. I can barely believe it, it feels really relieving...

Yeah, it didn't happen with the tractor or the car or office computer, etc. But those are all tools. This time we're not automating tools, we're automating minds.

Low skill, low pay jobs that require non-repetitive physical tasks might actually be the last to go due to the physical dexterity needed. Those and Trades where the job is different every time. ie. HVAC. A lot of middle class jobs are susceptible to this though. Factories, truck driving, etc. As you said, on the low skill end, If you walk into McDonald's you already see self order kiosks. Amazon's cashier-less store. These are good innovations for consumers that I support, but those people gotta work somewhere.

Elon musk did have trouble making his Model 3 line be highly automated so that's a point in your favour. But I don't think this future is far away.

boost themselves through hard work

Not if a robot can do it better. Or the chinese. Check out the documentary "American Factory". I dunno how we're going to compete with them when they don't even want weekends lol. It's a different way of life.

I think a UBI would help invigorate small town America by keeping money flowing into these places rather than just silicon valley. And somewhat protect against the effects of automation.

If I was a factory, farm, or business, owner, I definitely wouldn't want to hire humans if I could use a robot instead. Plus on a large scale it would make America more productive with less labour and enhance the quality of living, like the tractor did. Restricting the use of such tech to support human labour would be anti-capitalist and handicap America's productivity and progress against other economies. But without workers you have no customers. UBI sort of helps keep capitalism alive through the development of this technology.

I don't think that's fair, the "social credit score" was a getting points, gamification of helping the local community. Gamification gets people to do the most menial tasks so might help make American communities great again. You don't have to participate at all.

Plus this was just extra and nowhere near a pillar of his policy.

Don't you think UBI would supercharge little local economies? People would actually have spending money for local business. It's not socialism, it's more like going full on into capitalism as our technology develops.

He was very smart in understand that coming automation will only enhance the rust belt effect. Why would I use human workers at my factory when a robot can do the job 24/7 with no complaints or benefits? And if there's no workers, there's no customers.

And if you restrict such technology, you're handicapping America and other countries will outcompete. So you need an economic solution for this. The place to work will be the little local bakery. UBI helps keep capitalism alive in places that aren't tech centres.

As far as I could tell Yang was not an equal outcome kind of guy. He just wanted to give everybody a boost. What they do with it is their problem.

Yang actually trying to bring nuance and respect to the table, and people talk about him like that. Terrible.

Also zero logic to the term “nazi”. Clown world. Such simple people reciting the narratives they encounter, cant think for themselves or demand the reasoning behind these things...

So true. That was me. Trump was anti war and Hillary was a hawk. Trump / conservative fits more with those positions now.

Now the pandemic hysteria is “science” on the left, even though the data keeps getting better. (see Alex berenson or ethical skeptic on twitter). On the left it’s just ideology masked as science. And worst of all it’s just empty virtue signalling that might actually make things worse for people. Focusing on race for example just makes more tensions. We should all be blind to race and focus on character, as someone Important might have once said...

Another old school liberal checking in! I actually liked trump in 2016 too because he was more anti-war than Hillary who was a warmonger. The four years after that only solidified me as the media and narrative went full crazy with their hatred and biased reporting, anything to make orange man bad.

I liked Andrew yang too! A fresh face that was more about solutions than politics. Something the people actually want. And he really was about uniting Americans, and showed trump supporters in a positive light rather than demonizing them like the rest of left media. The nuance people need.

After the crazy year this year, and sleepy joe as their candidate... yeah it’s trump again. He actually aligns way more with my classic liberal mindset than any of this new regressive left...

agree about the masks, disagree about the bags. i'm not concerned about getting sick from a bag more than anything else i touch in public. which is not very concerned at all. i just wash my hands when i get home or before eating

We need to make an island where this new left can LARP covid doom and identity politics forever, while we get on with our lives.

I'm a filthy liberal (in the old sense, individual freedoms) but I just don't wanna be around these people anymore. Meanwhile we will literally be fine lmao, like sweden
